Public art is a critical component to the Creative District. Blank side walls and vacant land present an opportunity to create a District-wide canvas to showcase local talent, help visually distinguish the Creative District, and, in some locations, promote the District’s branding.
In addition to the intrinsic value of the final art product, the process by which the art is made, particularly if it is grounded in a broad-based community engagement strategy, can be extremely valuable to the community overall. Best practice examples of public art making that are driven by community engagement are found all over the world, but perhaps the single best example can be found a short distance from Wilmington at the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. For 30 years, Mural Arts has been a driving force behind Philadelphia’s changing communities and improved neighborhoods, creating almost 4,000 pieces of public art in Philadelphia neighborhoods.
Using the Mural Arts program as a model, the Creative District has already identified a number of walls and public spaces that are perfect opportunities for public art installations. As funding is identified and becomes available, artists will be engaged to lead a community engagement process similar to the Mural Arts Program.
