Veterans Freedom Mural: The First Public Art Prep Program

As the first project for PAPP, The Veterans Freedom Mural will be on the exterior wall of Marcella’s House, a 15-unit Veterans residential facility owned by Connections Community Support Programs, Inc. located at 901-903 Washington Street (the intersection of 9th and Washington Street) in Wilmington. Mural making at its core is a community process, and the Veteran’s Freedom Mural will be a collaborative effort that engages a number of key stakeholders in community planning meetings and community paint days.

 

Artist Eric Okdeh will act as lead artist on the project and facilitate workshops where artists will observe and learnfrom his process and practice the techniques while creating the Veteran’s Freedom Mural. Eric will facilitate thecommunity engagement process as well as instruct participants in translating community feedback into an imagedesign. Sessions will include learning how to use the parachute cloth method to create the mural and the actualinstallation of the parachute cloth. Creating and installing of glass mosaic will also be taught. All local communitymembers will be invited to paint days in the spring of 2016 when the mural design will be finalized.

 

Participants who complete the Public Art Prep workshop series will receive a non-credit certificate of completion. Inaddition, complimentary artist mixers, lectures, and certificate classes will be offered. Additional optional sessions willinclude an OSHA safety training and a workshop by University of Delaware Art Conservation Department professors.
