THE NEST: Nature's Creative Project—and home.

September 24, 2018

Home is family and self. Home is safety and peace. Home is comfort and freedom. Home is warm and fuzzy.

Attendees of the NEST project unveiling on September 7th shared what “home” means to them through an interactive activity.  Using the provided cards, those who joined us for the unveiling wrote down and described the concept of a “home.” They were on display

alongside the rest of the works.

A home contains family, friends, and self. Everyone understands what a home is, though we might differ on what it contains and brings to life.

In essence, this was what we wanted participants to think about as we developed the NEST project alongside local artist Susan Benarcik.

Throughout August, the community participated in a series of activities that led up to the design and construction of a “life-sized” nest sculpture in The Rock Lot. Made of natural materials such as sticks and vines, the large piece of art represents a collaboration between the artist and the community.

A nest is a home. It is also one of nature’s most creative projects. We combined these two concepts to create a project that is unique in how participants had to work together. Why? The NEST sculpture ebbed and flowed as those who joined Susan during the build days in August created it. There were no instructions to build it. It was an exercise in spontaneity and vision at the same time.

Much like home, which needs direction to be developed but is also an ever-evolving concept to us throughout our lives.
